Batumi: the Black Sea boulevard, and what remains off-season

Swimming months are May to September; July and August are the densest on the boulevard. April and October are better for walking if you do not need to get in the water. Winter is wet: rain, wind, closed summer terraces. A “romantic empty shore” is exactly that for some people — hotel choice is then wide, the poster is thin.

Adjara’s weather is not the heat trapped in Tbilisi’s bowl. The sea softens summer and makes winter damp. Check the Adjara forecast for the days your train or flight is already booked — a storm day on the boulevard is a different plan.

Boulevard, old town, north and south

The new boulevard is what most people mean by Batumi: a walkable shore, towers, evening light. The old town — low houses, shade, the market — is a few blocks inland, parallel to the boulevard, not instead of it. Both fit in a day; for the night, choose whether you want to wake to waves or a courtyard.

North, the Batumi Botanical Garden sits at Chakvi — a hillside over the sea, not a city park. South, Gonio and Kvariati continue the coast; Sarpi is a village at the Turkish border, not a separate resort. The Argo cable car shows the city from above; on a foggy day it may not be worth it.

You get around on foot and by marshrutka. There is no metro. Taxis work on short hops; marshrutkas toward Gonio or the garden are denser in the morning than in the evening. We do not publish fares.

What is on

Batumi’s listings are smaller than Tbilisi’s. Summer brings festivals and open stages; winter thins the page. The Black Sea Arena at Shekvetili is up the coast — a ride from Batumi, not a walk. Vendors still quote separately, so compare Batumi events on soon.ge before you trust one platform.

If you came for a large show and only want a “central Batumi” hotel, check where the stage actually is. Shekvetili and Anaklia look close on a map; the evening ride back is long. A price of zero here is unpublished, not free.

Airport, railway, a bed

Batumi airport (BUS) is south of the city, close to the water — the TBS rush-hour story is shorter here. The overnight train from Tbilisi is, for many people, more practical than a flight when the dates line up. Flights from Batumi are fewer than Tbilisi’s list; arriving at TBS and taking the train is often the real itinerary, not a direct BUS arrival.

A day in Adjara

Makhuntseti waterfall and Gonio fortress are the distances that return to the city in a day. Mtirala National Park is a rain forest — the name is not a joke; wear shoes and check the forecast. Kobuleti continues the coast north and collects its own summer crowd.
